The Story
As the story goes, our ancestors came from a long history back in time that could not be possibly traced with any degree of accuracy. A glimpse of the past could only be made through a place called Nam Zone. A group of 97 families, our ancestor being one of them, moved south some time after 1265 from Nam Zone. The move for the group was a forced relocation, according to the following story.
Towards the end of the Zone Dynasty, a young, beautiful and flirty concubine, by the name of Su who somehow had angered the Emperor, Tou-Chung, and was put under house arrest. Su, instead, ran away from the palace and disguised as a begger. A rich merchant by the name of Huang Chu-Van in Nam Zone saw Su, was taken by her beauty, took her home and made her one of his wives. He also changed her name to Chuang. Sometime later, the Emperor, Tou-Chung, pardoned Su but then found out she was already gone. The Emperor was furious and ordered his police force to track her down and arrest her. But they could not find her because her name had already been changed and had become one of Huang’s wives. Everything was fine until a follower of Huang, by the name of Liu, was fired by Huang for insubordination. Liu was angry and tried to report to the Emperor the where about of Su and her becoming the wife of Huang. The officials who took the report knew about Liu’s devious intention but then the report might also cause the officials themselves to be executed because they could not find Su when the Emperor asked them to. So they fabricated a story that there were many local war lords in Nam Zone and the only way to squash them was to disperse the entire city and, in the process, erased all traces of Su.
As a result, thousands of families in Nam Zone had to move. Among them, our ancestor’s group of 97 families stayed together to look for and finally found a place called Fan-Yeung in the province of Canton to move to. They had to get special permission from the officials and promised to pay taxes to them before they could settle there. Of the 97 family names, three were Lo’s. Our ancestor was one of them and his name was Yuen-Fu Lo.
Yuen-Fu Lo had six sons, of which five moved away and only the second son got established in Fan-Yeung and started to form the family chain. The slogan of the Lo clan was the last 11 characters shown on page 9 of the Chinese version section.
The phrase containing the 11 characters may be described as follows:
Outstanding achievements with honor, happiness, learned minds, good fortunes and prosperities for generations to come.
